Castaway, 1900 NW 18th Ave, Portland, OR 97209

Attire:
Relaxed - think "summertime backyard celebration." This indoor/outdoor event is rain or shine and the cornhole tournament is untented, so layers and hoods are advised (please check the weather forecast before your arrival). We know Portlanders aren't afraid of a little September drizzle!

Q. What exactly am I getting myself into?

A. Whether you play in the tournament or just stand back and watch the action, you'll have a great time while supporting PYB. The Cornhole Classic is a fundraising auction in celebration of Portland YouthBuilders. It also happens to be a competitive cornhole tournament - for those people who sign up early enough to get one of the coveted team slots! (To sign up, contact Taylor at 503-286-9381 x248 or taylor.wallau@pybpdx.org) Most of all, it's simply a fun way to support PYB and our incredible students.

Q. I don't want to play cornhole! What do I do?

A. Simply click the "Tickets" link above to get your tickets to The Cornhole Classic. There will be hosted beer and wine, auction items, and lots of inspiration. Heckling and/or cheering on our cornhole players during the tournament is encouraged!

Q. I want to play cornhole! What do I do?

A. 1) Purchase your event tickets at the "Tickets" link above. 2) Get a partner - this is a doubles tournament - and call Taylor at 503-286-9381 x248 to sign up your two-person team. There is no added charge beyond the event ticket price to play, but advance registration is required and space is limited. 3) When you call, we'll ask for your team name Get creative with your team name! Get corny!

Q. So, uh… cornhole? Really?

A. Absolutely! We would have called it “The Bean Bag Toss Classic,” but where’s the fun in that?

Q. Why are we doing this?

A. The Cornhole Classic is an event to benefit Portland YouthBuilders’ work in helping young people move beyond poverty. If we’re going to raise money for a worthy cause, we might as well have a good time doing it!

Q. Tell me about Portland YouthBuilders, the charity beneficiary.

A. Portland YouthBuilders (PYB) is an alternative high school and job readiness program that helps low-income high school dropouts find a pathway out of poverty. We serve young people between the ages of 17-24 with a combination of academics, vocational training, leadership development, counseling, and long term support. Our program works: on average, 85% of our students move on to college, apprenticeships, or the workforce.

Q. How does this tournament thing work?

A. Your ticket to The Cornhole Classic is not the same as tournament registration. There is no added fee to register a team; however, there are a limited number of tournament slots available. The only way to register a two-person team to play in the tournament is by calling Taylor at 503-286-9381 x248 after you purchase your event ticket. The tournament starts at 8:00PM but players should arrive at 5:00 to check-in, get oriented, and enjoy our dinner and program.

Q. I purchased a ticket to the event. Does that mean I get to play in the tournament?

A. Only if you called PYB to register your team after you purchased your ticket and received confirmation that space was available. Due to space limitations there are a limited number of tournament slots available; call Taylor at 503-286-9350 x248 for info!

Q. What do I have to do to be named Grand Cornhole Champion?

A. The Cornhole Classic is a round robin style tournament leading up to the playoffs. The number of teams that advance to the playoffs will be determined by the total number of teams registered. The tournament is capped at 56 two-person teams.

Q. How many people are on a team?

A. Two

Q. What does the winning team get?

A. Bragging rights, thunderous applause, and the glory of a job well done. We’ll even throw in some special medals, too. But no, there’s no cash purse for this tournament (remember, this is a fundraising event!).

Q. My friend/partner/grandmother wants to come out and watch me show off my exceptional cornhole skills. Do they need to purchase a ticket even if they’re not going to be on a team?

A. Yes, a ticket is required for all event attendees.

Q. I didn't see a place on the ticket purchase page to specify a meal choice. Can you accommodate special diets?

A. Our meal from Crown Paella includes vegetarian and gluten-free options.

Thank you to our sponsors!
